ChatGPT Ads explained: how OpenAI's ads work, what they cost (CPC and CPM), how to track them, how to set up a campaign, and which businesses should test them now.

Short answer: ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI shows to users on the Free and Go plans, below a relevant ChatGPT answer. They are clearly labelled and, according to OpenAI, do not change what ChatGPT says. Businesses in eligible countries can now run them through a self serve Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, paying per click (CPC) or per thousand impressions (CPM), with a pixel and Conversions API for tracking. On 5 October 2026 OpenAI also announced visual ads that will appear next to generated images, starting with a US test.

ChatGPT reaches about 1.2 billion people a week, according to OpenAI. That makes it the first new ad channel in years that could sit alongside Google and Meta in a media plan. This guide explains how ChatGPT Ads work today, what they cost, how to track them, and which businesses should test them now and which should wait.

How ChatGPT Ads work

  • Where they show: below a relevant answer, as a labelled card with your business name, logo, a short title, a line of copy, an image and a link. They do not appear inside the answer itself.
  • Who sees them: users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users do not see ads, and neither do users OpenAI believes are under 18.
  • How matching works: there are no keywords. You write context hints, plain language descriptions of the conversations your ad fits, and OpenAI matches ads using those hints plus your ad and landing page.
  • Privacy: advertisers never see users’ conversations. Reporting is aggregated at campaign level.

That last point matters for planning. You cannot target a single exact search the way you can in Google Ads, so think of ChatGPT Ads as intent based placements inside a conversation, not as a replacement for Google Ads bidding on keywords.

What ChatGPT Ads cost

Ads are sold in a relevance weighted auction. You choose an objective, and the objective sets how you pay:

ObjectiveYou payStarting point
ClicksPer click (CPC)OpenAI suggests a starting maximum bid of about $3 to $5 per click
ReachPer 1,000 impressions (CPM)The default maximum CPM bid is $60

These are bid caps, not typical prices, and there are no reliable public benchmarks yet. The early managed pilot required very large minimum commitments. Self serve is built for smaller advertisers too, but check the current minimums in Ads Manager before you plan. Plan a fixed test budget, run it for a few weeks, and judge it on cost per lead or cost per sale, not clicks.

How to track results

  • Pixel and Conversions API: track purchases, leads and sign ups in Ads Manager. Set up both, as you would for Meta’s Pixel and Conversions API.
  • UTM parameters: tag every landing page URL so ChatGPT traffic shows up separately in GA4.
  • Measurement partners: OpenAI now works with attribution tools such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Northbeam and Branch, and with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic for incrementality tests. OpenAI describes the incrementality work as early.

OpenAI has published a few early partner results, such as WeightWatchers seeing an attributed cost per acquisition 15.3% lower than its blended paid search benchmark. These are selected case studies, so treat them as encouraging signals rather than averages.

How to set up your first ChatGPT Ads campaign

  1. Check eligibility. The business that pays for ads must be registered in a country on OpenAI’s Ads Manager availability list. Check the list in OpenAI’s help centre before you start, as it changes.
  2. Sign up at ads.openai.com and complete business verification and billing. Agencies need a separate account for each client.
  3. Install tracking first: pixel, Conversions API and UTMs, then test a conversion.
  4. Write context hints that describe real questions your buyers ask, for example “comparing project management tools for a small agency”.
  5. Create the ad: a short title (around 16 characters), a short description (around 32 characters) and an image where your logo is not the main element.
  6. Start with the Clicks objective and a conservative CPC bid, then review cost per conversion after two to three weeks.

Who should test ChatGPT Ads now

Good fit nowWait and watch
B2B software and SaaS, where buyers research and compare optionsLocal service businesses that rely on map and near me searches
Online courses and educationHealth, finance and other regulated categories while policies settle
Considered eCommerce purchases with a clear use caseVery small budgets that are still not profitable on Google or Meta
Professional services with a strong landing pageBusinesses without conversion tracking in place

My view: if Google Ads and Meta Ads are already profitable for you, set aside a small test budget for ChatGPT Ads now, while competition in the auction is still low. If they are not, fix those first. And keep working on organic visibility too: being recommended by ChatGPT in its answers costs nothing per click.

What about businesses in Bangladesh?

ChatGPT Ads are expanding quickly across Asia, but you need to check whether your country is on OpenAI’s Ads Manager list before trying to open an account. Agencies and freelancers in Bangladesh can still manage ChatGPT Ads for clients whose businesses are registered in an eligible country such as the US, UK, Canada or Australia, using the client’s own Ads Manager account. That is also how most international Google Ads and Meta Ads work is done.
