Should You Bid on Your Own Brand Name in Google Ads?

Brand campaigns are cheap and often look amazing in reports, but are they worth it? When bidding on your brand name protects sales, when it wastes money, and how to set it up properly.

Short answer: Bidding on your own brand name is usually worth it when competitors or resellers bid on it, when you want to control the message and sitelinks, or when organic results do not show you clearly. It is usually cheap. But brand campaigns can make overall Google Ads results look better than they really are, so keep brand and non brand in separate campaigns and judge them separately.

Why advertisers bid on their brand

  • Competitors may show ads on your name and take customers who were looking for you.
  • Control: you choose the headline, offer and landing page.
  • Space: your ad plus organic listing takes more of the page.
  • Cost: brand clicks usually have low cost per click and high conversion rate.

Why some advertisers stop

  • Many brand searchers would click your organic result anyway.
  • Brand results can hide weak performance in other campaigns.
  • In some cases, turning brand ads off saves money without losing many sales.

How to decide

SituationRecommendation
Competitors bid on your brandRun brand ads
You rank first organically and nobody else bidsTest pausing in one region
You have offers or new products to pushRun brand ads with that message
Brand traffic is a large share of conversionsSeparate it and report it apart

If you are unsure, run a geo test: pause brand ads in some regions and compare total sales with regions where they continue.

How to set up a brand campaign

  1. Create a separate Search campaign for brand terms.
  2. Use exact and phrase match brand keywords, including common misspellings.
  3. Add your brand as a negative keyword in non brand campaigns and in Performance Max where brand exclusions are available.
  4. Use sitelinks to key pages, such as pricing, contact and best sellers.
  5. Use a bid strategy like Target impression share or a conversion based strategy with sensible limits.

Reporting

Report brand and non brand separately. Non brand campaigns show whether Google Ads is finding new customers. Brand campaigns mostly protect demand you already created through other channels.
