Short answer: When leads turn into sales later, in a call, a meeting or a CRM, Google Ads only sees the form fill. Offline conversion import sends those later outcomes back to Google, so Smart Bidding learns which clicks become qualified leads and customers. You can match conversions with the click ID (GCLID) or with enhanced conversions for leads, which uses hashed email or phone numbers. It is one of the biggest improvements a lead generation account can make.
Why it matters
If you optimise only for form fills, Google finds people who fill in forms, including spam and poor fit leads. If you send back which leads became qualified or bought, Google can find more people like your real customers.
Two ways to match conversions
| Method | What you store | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Click ID (GCLID) | The click ID saved with each lead | Most CRMs and form tools, when you can store a hidden field |
| Enhanced conversions for leads | Email or phone from the form, hashed | Setups where saving the click ID is hard |
Many advertisers now use enhanced conversions for leads because it needs less custom work and also helps when click IDs are lost.
How to set it up
- Decide your stages, for example qualified lead, booked meeting and closed sale.
- Create conversion actions in Google Ads for each stage, with the import source.
- Capture the data: store the GCLID in a hidden form field and in your CRM, or turn on enhanced conversions for leads on your forms.
- Send the outcomes back. Use a direct CRM integration where available, Google Ads Data Manager, scheduled uploads from Google Sheets, or an automation tool.
- Choose the primary goal. Once you have enough volume, make the qualified lead or sale the primary conversion for bidding.
Add values
Give each stage a value. A closed sale can use the real revenue. A qualified lead can use an estimate based on your close rate. Values let you move to Maximize conversion value or Target ROAS bidding.
Timing and volume
- Upload conversions regularly, ideally daily.
- Conversions must be uploaded within Google’s time limits after the click, so do not wait months.
- If you have very few sales, use an earlier stage such as qualified lead as the bidding goal, and track sales as secondary.
Common problems
- Click ID not saved when a lead comes from a different form or a phone call
- Different time zones between the CRM and Google Ads
- Duplicate uploads of the same sale
- Too few imported conversions for Smart Bidding to learn
