Short answer: Google Ads for Shopify works best when four things are built in order: a clean Merchant Center account, a product feed that Google approves, purchase tracking with real order values, and then Shopping or Performance Max campaigns that use that feed. A specialist spends most of the first weeks on the foundations, not the ads. If the feed and tracking are wrong, no campaign setting will fix the results.
Why eCommerce Google Ads is different from lead generation
A lead generation account is built around keywords and landing pages. An online store is built around products. Shopping ads and most Performance Max placements are generated from your product data, so the feed acts like your keyword list, your ad copy and your landing page map at the same time.
That changes the job. A Google Ads specialist working with a Shopify store spends as much time on product titles, images, prices and stock status as on bids and budgets. If you want the wider picture of the role first, read what a Google Ads specialist does.
Step 1: Connect Shopify to Google Merchant Center
Most Shopify stores connect through the Google & YouTube app. According to Google Merchant Center Help, the app syncs product data from Shopify into Merchant Center, supports conversion tracking, and links to Google Ads, Google Analytics, YouTube Shopping and Google Business Profile.
What I check during this step:
- The Merchant Center account is owned by the business, not by a former freelancer or agency.
- The website domain is verified and claimed in Merchant Center.
- Shipping and returns settings match what the store actually offers.
- Only the products you want to advertise are made available to the Google channel.
- Merchant Center is linked to the correct Google Ads account. Google notes that the Merchant Center connection on a Shopping campaign cannot be changed after the campaign is created, so get this right first.
Be patient after the first sync. Shopify’s help centre says Google reviews new products within 3 to 5 business days after the initial sync.
Step 2: Fix the product feed before spending money
Google’s product data specification lists the attributes every product needs: an ID, title, description, product link, image link, availability and price. Products also need a GTIN, or an MPN plus brand when no GTIN exists. Shopify pulls most of this from your product pages, which is why messy product data in Shopify becomes a messy feed in Google.
Shopify lists the most common sync problems as missing descriptions, missing images, unavailable landing pages, missing product identifiers, images with promotional overlays and titles written in all capitals. Here is the feed checklist I work through:
- Clear the disapprovals. Open the Merchant Center diagnostics and fix every product that is not approved.
- Rewrite titles for search. Put the words a shopper types first: brand, product type, key attribute such as size, colour or material.
- Add barcodes. Fill the barcode field in Shopify with real GTINs where the products have them.
- Use clean images. No text overlays, watermarks or borders on the main image.
- Check price and stock. The price and availability in the feed must match the landing page.
- Add custom labels. Tag products by margin, bestseller status or season so campaigns can treat them differently later.
Step 3: Track purchases with real order values
Bidding for an online store should be based on revenue, not just the number of orders. That means every purchase conversion must send the actual order value. Google’s own Performance Max optimisation tips for feed-based campaigns recommend the Google tag on the site, enhanced conversions and transaction-specific conversion values so value-based bidding can work.
Before launch, I confirm:
- There is one primary purchase conversion action, not two counting the same order.
- The conversion value matches the order value in Shopify for a test order.
- Enhanced conversions are switched on, so hashed customer data improves measurement.
- Add to cart and begin checkout are tracked as secondary actions for reporting, not bidding.
If you use GA4 and Google Tag Manager alongside the Shopify app, my guide to Google Ads conversion tracking with GA4 and GTM covers how to avoid double counting.
Step 4: Choose Shopping, Performance Max or both
Both campaign types use the Merchant Center feed. The difference is reach and control. Performance Max gives one campaign access to all Google Ads inventory, while Standard Shopping stays focused on product ads in search.
| Factor | Standard Shopping | Performance Max with a feed |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads show | Shopping results on Google Search and search partners | All Google Ads inventory: Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, with Shopping ads built from your feed |
| Control | Product groups, bids, negative keywords | Asset groups, listing groups, audience signals, exclusions |
| Creative needed | The feed only | Feed plus text, images and video |
| Best for | Tight budgets, testing, strict control | Stores with steady conversion data and good creative |
For most Shopify stores, I start with Performance Max as the main sales campaign once tracking is solid. Google suggests keeping the structure simple so the AI works with a unified budget, and splitting campaigns only for clear reasons such as different countries, different ROAS targets for product tiers, or seasonal offers. Inside a campaign, separate asset groups for each product category let you match creative to products.
Standard Shopping still earns a place. I use it for small budgets, for testing a new category, or when a client wants to see and control exactly which search terms trigger product ads.
Step 5: Add brand Search and protect the budget
A separate Search campaign for your brand name gives you clean reporting and control over the message shoppers see when they search for you directly. Beyond that, the first month of management is about stopping waste:
- Review search terms in Shopping and the search terms insights in Performance Max.
- Add negative keywords for irrelevant searches such as free, DIY, jobs or competitor products you do not sell.
- Exclude out-of-stock or low-margin products from campaigns using listing groups and custom labels.
- Give Smart Bidding time. Google recommends running Performance Max for at least 6 weeks before judging it.
What a specialist reports on each month
For eCommerce, the report should connect ad spend to money in the bank. I focus on:
- Revenue and ROAS by campaign, and by product category where possible.
- Products that spend without selling, and products that sell but get little budget.
- Feed health: new disapprovals, price mismatches and stock problems.
- Whole-business numbers like MER and customer acquisition cost, explained in ROAS vs MER vs CAC, because platform ROAS alone can flatter the results.
What I recommend: do not judge Google Ads for Shopify on the first two weeks. Judge it on whether the feed is clean, tracking matches Shopify orders, and the cost per sale trends in the right direction over the first two to three months.
