Short answer: On 15 October 2026, Google launched Universal Cart for shoppers in the US. It is one cart that holds products from many different stores across Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app. It tracks prices and stock, alerts shoppers to price drops, and shows promo codes and card perks through Google Wallet. Shoppers can pay inside the cart with Google Pay or send the items to the store’s own website to finish checkout. The store stays the seller in both cases.
For online stores, this is a big step towards Google becoming a shopping destination, not just a source of clicks. Here is what it means and what to do now.
How Universal Cart works
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| One cart, many stores | Shoppers save products from different retailers in one place |
| Price and stock tracking | Alerts when a saved item drops in price or comes back in stock |
| Promotions and perks | Shows promo codes and card benefits through Google Wallet |
| Checkout | Pay with Google Pay in the cart, or transfer the cart to the merchant’s site |
| Where it appears | Google Search (including AI Mode) and the Gemini app, US only |
Products come from Google’s Shopping Graph, which is built from Merchant Center product data. That means your feed is what decides how your products look inside the cart.
Which merchants are in it
At launch Google named large retailers such as Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart and Wayfair, plus many Shopify merchants. Checkout runs on Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).
For other stores, access is not automatic yet. Based on Google’s merchant documentation, the steps are:
- Complete the technical setup in Google’s UCP developer guide, including a UCP profile with the cart capability.
- Submit an interest form in Merchant Center.
- If selected, get onboarding and a sandbox to test cart transfer and checkout.
If you sell on Shopify, WooCommerce or another platform, ask your platform about its UCP plans. Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed access.
What it means for advertisers
- Shopping ads and free listings matter more. Products that are easy to save and compare in Google will win more carts.
- Price competitiveness is visible. Price drop alerts reward stores with sharp prices and clear promotions.
- Tracking may get harder. Purchases completed with Google Pay inside the cart may not fire your normal website tags. Test this before relying on your reports, and make sure enhanced conversions are on. My Data Strength guide explains why.
- Promotions are a lever. Approved Merchant Center promotions can show in AI Mode and in the cart. See Merchant Center updates for October 2026.
What to do before Black Friday
- Fix your feed. Clear disapprovals, complete titles, prices, availability, brand and images. My Google Shopping feed guide covers this.
- Submit promotions early. Black Friday is 27 November. Leave time for review.
- Check your prices against competitors on your best sellers.
- Test a purchase journey from Google Search to your checkout, and confirm conversions are recorded.
- Watch AI Mode. Read Ads in Google AI Mode for how ads appear there.
What about stores outside the US?
Universal Cart is US only for now. Google has said the merchant integration hub is expected in Australia and Canada next year, with no dates for other markets. Bangladeshi brands and exporters selling to US customers through Shopify or their own store should still prepare their Merchant Center feeds now, because that data powers Shopping ads, free listings and AI Mode today.
