Short answer: Automated rules in Meta Ads Manager check your campaigns, ad sets or ads on a schedule and act when a condition is met: turn off an ad, adjust budget, or send a notification. The most useful rules for most accounts are safety rules, such as turning off ads that spend a set amount with no results, and alert rules for high costs or frequency. Avoid rules that change budgets every few hours, which can keep ad sets in learning and make results worse.

Where to find rules

Open Ads Manager, select Rules from the menu or the toolbar, and choose Create a new rule. You can apply a rule to all active campaigns, ad sets or ads, or to specific ones.

Rules worth setting up

RuleConditionAction
Spend with no resultsSpent more than 2 to 3 times your target cost per result, 0 resultsTurn off ad, or notify
High cost per resultCost per result above your limit over 3 to 7 daysNotify
High frequencyFrequency above your limit for cold audiencesNotify
Daily spend checkSpend above a set amount todayNotify

Start with notifications. Switch to automatic actions only once you trust the rule.

Rules to avoid

  • Frequent budget changes, for example raising budget by 20% every few hours. This can restart learning and cause unstable costs.
  • Turning off ads too early, before they have had a fair amount of spend.
  • Rules based on one day of data, which is often noise.
  • Overlapping rules that act on the same ad sets in different ways.

Setting good conditions

  1. Use a time range of at least 3 days, ideally 7, for performance rules.
  2. Set thresholds from your own data, such as target cost per purchase.
  3. Add a minimum spend or impression condition so new ads get a chance.
  4. Name each rule clearly, for example “Pause ads: 75 dollars spend, 0 purchases, 7 days”.

Check rule history

Each rule has a history of when it ran and what it changed. Review it weekly to make sure rules are doing what you expect.
