Meta Advantage+ Audience Explained: Suggestions vs Controls

Advantage+ audience lets Meta find buyers beyond the targeting you suggest. What you can still control, how suggestions work, and when to use original audiences instead.

Short answer: With Advantage+ audience, you give Meta audience suggestions such as age ranges, interests or a lookalike, and Meta uses them as a starting point but can show ads to anyone it predicts will convert. Some settings stay as firm limits, called audience controls, such as location, minimum age, excluded custom audiences and language. For most accounts with good tracking and strong creative, Advantage+ audience performs as well as or better than narrow targeting.

Suggestions vs controls

TypeExamplesCan Meta go beyond it?
Audience controlsLocation, minimum age, exclusions, languageNo
Audience suggestionsInterests, age range, gender, custom audiences, lookalikesYes, if it expects better results

This difference is the most misunderstood part of Meta targeting. If something must never change, such as country or minimum age, set it as a control.

Why broad targeting often works

Meta’s delivery system uses signals from millions of conversions. When you narrow the audience too much, you stop it from finding buyers you would not have guessed. Your creative then becomes the targeting: a video about a product for new mothers mostly attracts new mothers, whatever the settings say.

When to use original audiences

Switch to original audience options when:

  • You sell something with strict eligibility, such as a service only for doctors
  • You run retargeting that must stay inside a custom audience
  • You are testing whether a specific audience performs differently
  • Your tracking is weak, so Meta has little data to learn from

How to set up Advantage+ audience well

  1. Set location, minimum age and exclusions as controls.
  2. Add one or two suggestions, such as a lookalike of buyers, if you have them.
  3. Exclude recent purchasers if the campaign is for new customers.
  4. Make sure the pixel and Conversions API send good quality events.
  5. Put your effort into creative variety, because creative now does much of the targeting.

How to judge it

Compare against an original audience ad set with the same budget and creative, ideally with the A/B test tool. Judge on cost per purchase or qualified lead over at least a week, not on CPM or clicks.

Frequently asked questions
