Short answer: Advantage+ catalog ads (previously called dynamic product ads) automatically show products from your catalog to people based on what they viewed, added to cart or are likely to want. To make them work you need three things: a clean product catalog in Commerce Manager, pixel and Conversions API events that send the same product IDs as the catalog, and a campaign that uses the catalog with a Sales objective. Most problems come from mismatched product IDs and poor product images.
What catalog ads do
Instead of designing one ad per product, you create one template. Meta fills it with products from your catalog and picks which products to show each person. They work for:
- Retargeting: people who viewed or added products to cart but did not buy
- Prospecting: new people who are likely to want certain products
- Cross selling: past buyers who might want related items
Step 1: build a clean catalog
- Create a catalog in Commerce Manager.
- Connect it to your store. Shopify and WooCommerce have official integrations, or you can upload a data feed.
- Make sure every product has an ID, title, description, price, availability, link and image.
- Use clear, high quality images, ideally square, with the product easy to see.
- Create product sets, for example best sellers, a category or items above a price.
Step 2: connect events to products
Your pixel and Conversions API must send these events with a content_ids value that matches the catalog ID exactly:
| Event | When it fires |
|---|---|
| ViewContent | Product page viewed |
| AddToCart | Product added to cart |
| InitiateCheckout | Checkout started |
| Purchase | Order completed |
Check matching in Events Manager under the catalog diagnostics. If IDs do not match, Meta cannot connect a visit to a product and retargeting fails.
Step 3: create the campaign
- Choose the Sales objective.
- Turn on the catalog option and select your catalog and product set.
- Choose the audience: retarget people who interacted with products, or let Meta find new people.
- Build the ad with a carousel or collection format, and add a headline and primary text that work for any product.
- Add catalog creative options, such as frames, price or discount labels, if they fit your brand.
Tips for better results
- Exclude recent buyers of the same product from retargeting.
- Keep the feed updated so out of stock items stop showing.
- Use product sets to focus spend on items with good margins.
- Test lifestyle images against plain product photos.
- Mix catalog ads with creative ads. Catalog ads are strong for retargeting, while video and image ads often work better for first contact.
Common mistakes
- Product IDs in events do not match the catalog
- Missing or wrong prices and availability
- Low quality or cropped images
- Retargeting window too short or too long for your buying cycle
- One generic text that does not make sense for every product
