Short answer: From 28 October 2026, Meta will switch on product browsing for existing Facebook and Instagram ads unless you opt out. When someone taps an eligible ad, they may first see a page inside Facebook or Instagram with product details and personalised suggestions, instead of going straight to your website. Meta says advertisers in its test saw about 3% more conversions on average. You can opt out from the notice before 28 October, or turn it off per ad in the Advantage+ Creative and Destination settings.
The timing matters. 28 October is exactly 30 days before Black Friday, when most stores are scaling budgets. Here is what you need to decide this week.
What product browsing is
Product browsing is an Advantage+ Creative feature for Sales campaigns that send people to a website. Until now it was optional. With this change, Meta is adding it to ads that are already running.
| Without product browsing | With product browsing | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens after a tap | Person lands on your product page | Person may first see a product page inside Facebook or Instagram |
| Suggestions shown | None, only your site | Product details plus personalised suggestions |
| Path to purchase | Your site from the first click | Can continue to your site from the in-app page |
| Control | Default today | On by default from 28 October unless you opt out |
Meta has not said which formats, placements or objectives are covered, or whether new ads will also default to on. Its help documentation links product browsing to Sales campaigns with Website as the conversion location.
Where the news comes from
Advertisers received a notice in Ads Manager around 14 and 15 October 2026. At the time of writing, Meta has not published a newsroom post or a help article about the default change, so treat the details as what the notice says, not a full official rollout plan.
The 3% claim
Meta says that “on average, businesses saw 3% more conversions” with in-app product browsing. That comes from an experiment run from 6 to 21 August 2026 across about 117,700 advertisers.
Keep three things in mind:
- It is Meta’s own figure. It has not been verified by anyone outside Meta.
- The conversion type is not defined. It may include conversions measured in a way that favours Meta’s own surfaces.
- An average hides big differences. Some accounts may gain, others may lose.
Who should opt out (or test first)
- Lead generation advertisers. If your ads are meant to send people to a landing page with a form, an extra stop inside the app adds friction.
- Stores with a small or poorly structured catalog. Personalised suggestions can show products you do not want to push, or items with low margins.
- Brands that rely on their own site experience. Bundles, quizzes, upsells and email capture only happen on your website.
- Advertisers with weak tracking. If your Meta Pixel and Conversions API are not set up properly, you will not be able to tell whether the change helped.
Who might leave it on
- Larger eCommerce stores with a clean catalog and strong product data
- Mobile heavy audiences where a fast in-app page beats a slow website
- Advertisers who are ready to run a proper comparison test before Black Friday
How to opt out or turn it off
- Before 28 October: open the notice in Ads Manager and use the Opt out button. It is not yet clear whether one opt out covers every ad account you manage, so check each account.
- Any time: open the ad, go to Advantage+ Creative and the Destination settings, and switch product browsing off.
- After 28 October: spot check your top spending ads to confirm the setting is what you chose.
How to test it properly
Do not decide based on Meta’s average. Run your own test:
- Duplicate one Sales campaign, or use an A/B test in Ads Manager.
- Keep budget, audience and creative the same. Turn product browsing on in one version only.
- Run it for at least two to three weeks before your Black Friday push.
- Judge it on purchases and revenue in your own store or CRM, not only on conversions reported in Ads Manager.
- Check landing page sessions in GA4. If they fall while Meta reports more conversions, look closely before scaling.
