ChatGPT Traffic Showing as Direct in GA4? Here Is Why

ChatGPT referrals dropped and direct traffic rose in October 2026 because links lost their UTM tag. Here is what happened, how to check your GA4, and how to track AI traffic reliably.

Short answer: In the second week of October 2026, many sites saw ChatGPT referral traffic fall and direct traffic rise by a similar amount. The cause was tracking, not lost visitors: ChatGPT links stopped carrying the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, and ChatGPT often does not pass a referrer, so GA4 and other tools labelled those visits as direct. OpenAI said on 14 October that it was a technical error and that a fix was rolling out. If your ChatGPT numbers dropped from around 8 October, check the steps below before you change your SEO or content plans.

AI search is now a real traffic source for many businesses, so a reporting glitch like this can lead to bad decisions. Here is what happened and how to make your AI traffic tracking more reliable.

What happened

  • Since mid 2026, ChatGPT has added utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links it shows in answers. That tag is how most analytics tools recognise ChatGPT visits.
  • Around 8 October 2026, shortly after a new ChatGPT model release, the tag disappeared from many links.
  • ChatGPT links often open without a referrer. With no tag and no referrer, a visit looks exactly like someone typing your address directly.
  • An analysis of about 500 pages that normally get a lot of ChatGPT traffic found ChatGPT visits fell by about 31,000 a day between 9 and 13 October, while direct visits on the same pages rose by about 26,000 a day.
  • OpenAI confirmed on 14 October that it was a technical error and that a fix was being rolled out.

How to check your own GA4

  1. Open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition and compare 1 to 7 October with 8 to 15 October.
  2. Add a filter for Session source contains chatgpt. Did it drop sharply?
  3. Now look at Direct traffic for the same dates. Did it rise at the same time?
  4. Check landing pages for the direct traffic. If the new direct visits land on deep blog posts or service pages, not your homepage, they are very likely AI visits. Real direct visitors usually type your homepage.
  5. Compare engagement. If the new direct sessions behave like your old ChatGPT sessions, with similar pages and time on site, that confirms it.

If the pattern matches, add an annotation in your reports for these dates so nobody panics later.

How to track AI traffic more reliably

You cannot control how ChatGPT tags its links, but you can make your own setup stronger.

Create an AI channel group in GA4

In GA4, go to Admin, Data display, Channel groups and create a custom channel called AI Assistants. Set it to match when the session source contains any of these:

  • chatgpt.com or openai
  • perplexity.ai
  • gemini.google.com
  • copilot.microsoft.com
  • claude.ai

Place it above Referral in the channel order. Now AI traffic appears as its own line in every acquisition report.

Watch the right pages, not just one number

AI answers usually send people to specific pages: guides, comparisons and service pages. Track those pages over time. If their direct traffic jumps while ChatGPT referrals fall, you know it is a labelling issue.

Ask people where they found you

Add a simple How did you hear about us? field to your contact and booking forms, with ChatGPT or AI assistant as an option. For service businesses, this is often the most honest AI traffic data you will get.

Track conversions, not only sessions

What matters is leads and sales from AI search. Make sure your key conversions are set up properly in GA4, as explained in my GA4 and GTM tracking guide.

What this means for GEO and AEO

This episode is a reminder that AI traffic is real but under reported. Even when tagging works, some AI visits arrive without a source. So do not judge your generative engine optimisation (GEO) work on referral numbers alone. Also look at:

  • Whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand for your main topics
  • Branded search growth in Google Search Console
  • Leads who say they found you through an AI assistant

My guide on how to get recommended by ChatGPT and AI search explains what helps you get mentioned in the first place.

What about ChatGPT Ads traffic?

If you run ChatGPT Ads, always add your own UTM parameters to the ad landing page URLs and use OpenAI’s pixel and Conversions API. That way your paid ChatGPT traffic is tracked even when organic ChatGPT links lose their tags.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ChatGPT traffic showing as direct in GA4?
Because the visit arrived without a UTM tag and without a referrer. In October 2026 ChatGPT links temporarily lost their utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, so GA4 counted those visits as direct.
Did ChatGPT traffic actually drop in October 2026?
For most sites, no. Analysis showed ChatGPT referrals fell while direct traffic rose by a similar amount on the same pages. OpenAI said it was a technical error and rolled out a fix.
When did the ChatGPT tracking problem happen?
Reports point to roughly 8 to 15 October 2026. OpenAI confirmed the error on 14 October and said a fix was being rolled out.
How do I track AI traffic in GA4?
Create a custom channel group called AI Assistants that matches sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai, and place it above Referral.
Is all AI traffic tracked in analytics?
No. Some AI visits always arrive without a source, so AI traffic is usually under reported. Use landing page trends, branded search and form answers to get a fuller picture.
Who can set up AI traffic tracking for my website?
Saifur Saif is a digital marketer in Bangladesh who sets up GA4 tracking and works on SEO, GEO and AEO so businesses can measure and grow traffic from AI search.
