Google Ads Daily Budget: Why Google Spends More Some Days

Google Ads can spend up to twice your daily budget on some days but stays within a monthly limit. How daily budgets, overdelivery and the monthly cap work, and how to plan spend safely.

Short answer: Your Google Ads daily budget is an average, not a hard daily cap. On busy days Google can spend up to twice the daily budget, and less on quiet days. Over a month, you will not be charged more than about 30.4 times your average daily budget for that campaign. If you need a strict total, use a campaign total budget where available or account level budget controls, and plan changes knowing that the monthly limit is based on the average.

How daily budgets work

RuleWhat it means
Daily budgetThe average you want to spend per day
OverdeliveryUp to 2x the daily budget can be spent on a single day
Monthly charging limitAbout 30.4 x the average daily budget for the month

Google spends more on days with more searches or better conversion chances, and less on others, to make the most of the budget across the month.

Example

A campaign with a 20 dollar daily budget might spend 35 dollars on a busy Monday and 10 dollars on a quiet Sunday. Over a 30 day month, it should not charge more than about 608 dollars, which is 20 x 30.4.

When budgets change mid month

If you change the daily budget during the month, the monthly limit is recalculated from the time you change it. Big increases late in the month can lead to a higher total than you expected, so plan budget changes early.

Ad schedules and budgets

Turning ads off on some days does not reduce the monthly limit in the same way. Google may spend more on the days you run, still within the 30.4 rule. Plan budgets with your schedule in mind.

Tools for tighter control

  • Shared budgets across several campaigns
  • Campaign total budgets for fixed periods, such as a promotion, where available
  • Account budgets if you use monthly invoicing
  • Automated rules to pause campaigns at a spend limit
  • Alerts in your reporting

Budget limited campaigns

If a campaign shows Limited by budget, it could get more results with more budget. That is not always a problem. If the cost per conversion is already high, improve the campaign before adding budget.
