Performance Max Asset Groups: How to Build Them Properly

Asset groups decide what your Performance Max ads look like and who they reach. How to split asset groups, which assets to add, how audience signals work and how to read asset reporting.

Short answer: An asset group in Performance Max is a set of headlines, descriptions, images, videos and logos, plus optional audience signals and listing groups, built around one theme. Create separate asset groups for clearly different products, services or audiences, fill every asset slot with strong, specific assets, add your own video rather than letting Google make one, and use audience signals from your customer data as hints. Review asset reporting monthly and replace weak assets.

What an asset group is

Performance Max shows ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Google builds the ads from the assets in each asset group. One campaign can contain several asset groups, each with its own message and, for stores, its own set of products.

How to split asset groups

Split byExampleWhen it helps
Product categoryShoes, bags, accessoriesDifferent images and messages
ServiceImplants, whitening, bracesDifferent landing pages
AudienceNew customers, wholesale buyersDifferent offers
Price tierPremium, budgetDifferent value messages

Do not create dozens of tiny asset groups. Each one needs enough traffic to learn.

Assets to add

  1. Headlines and long headlines that cover benefits, offers and proof
  2. Descriptions that explain the offer and answer objections
  3. Images in landscape, square and portrait sizes, showing the product or service clearly
  4. Logos in square and landscape formats
  5. Videos in horizontal, square and vertical formats. If you add none, Google may create a basic one from your images, which often looks generic.
  6. Final URL for the theme, with care over URL expansion settings

Fill as many slots as you can with distinct options, so Google has real combinations to test.

Audience signals

Signals tell Performance Max where to start looking. Good signals:

  • Your customer lists through Customer Match
  • Website visitors and converters
  • Custom segments based on search terms people use
  • Interests that match your buyers

Signals are hints, not limits. Performance Max can and will show ads to people outside them.

Read asset reporting

Open the asset group and check asset performance and the combinations report. Replace assets rated low after they have had enough impressions. Test new angles, not just small wording changes.

Common mistakes

  • One asset group for every product in a large store
  • Only text assets, no images or video
  • Generic stock photos
  • Final URL expansion sending traffic to irrelevant pages

Frequently asked questions

What is an asset group in Performance Max?
It is a collection of creative assets, audience signals and, for stores, product listings built around one theme.
How many asset groups should I have?
Enough to separate truly different products, services or audiences, but not so many that each gets little traffic.
Do audience signals limit who sees my ads?
No. They guide Performance Max at the start, but ads can reach people outside the signals.
Should I upload my own videos?
Yes. Your own videos usually perform and look better than automatically generated ones.
How do I know which assets work?
Use asset performance ratings and the combinations report, and replace weak assets over time.
