Short answer: In the Performance Max vs Search debate, the answer for most accounts is “both, with clear jobs”. Use Search when you need control over keywords, ad copy and landing pages, especially for brand terms and high-intent lead generation. Use Performance Max when you want to reach buyers across every Google channel and you have a product feed, strong creative and reliable conversion data. eCommerce stores usually lean on Performance Max; lead generation businesses usually lean on Search.
What each campaign type actually does
Search campaigns show text ads on Google search results for the keywords you choose. You write the ads, pick the landing pages and decide which queries to target or exclude. In 2026, Search campaigns can also use AI Max for Search, which adds AI-driven search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion on top of your keywords.
Performance Max is a goal-based campaign that gives you access to all Google Ads inventory from one campaign: Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. You supply assets, audience signals, search themes and a product feed if you sell online. Google’s AI decides where, when and to whom the ads show.
Performance Max vs Search: side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Search | Performance Max |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads show | Google search results and search partners | Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps |
| Targeting | Keywords (plus AI Max matching if enabled) | Audience signals, search themes, product feed, Google AI |
| Ad formats | Text ads with assets | Text, image, video and Shopping ads built from your assets |
| Control over queries | High: keywords, match types, negatives | Medium: negatives, brand exclusions, search themes |
| Reporting | Full keyword and search terms data | Search terms, channel performance and asset reports |
| Data needs | Can work with modest conversion volume | Works best with steady, accurate conversion data |
| Best fit | Brand, high-intent services, B2B lead gen | eCommerce with a feed, multi-channel demand |
When to use Search campaigns
- Brand protection. A dedicated brand Search campaign gives you control over your own name, ad copy and sitelinks.
- Lead generation with clear intent. Plumbers, lawyers, clinics and B2B software buyers search with specific words. Search lets you match those words to specific pages.
- Small budgets. When budget is tight, you want every pound or dollar on the queries most likely to convert, not spread across seven channels.
- Regulated or sensitive industries. When you need tight control over messaging and where ads appear.
- Weak conversion data. If you only get a handful of conversions a month, Search with tight keywords is easier to steer.
When to use Performance Max
- Online stores with a Merchant Center feed. Performance Max is the main way to run Shopping ads at scale alongside other channels.
- You have real creative. Good images, product videos and clear headlines. Without them, Google fills the gaps with automatically created assets.
- You want to find new demand. Performance Max can reach people on YouTube and Discover before they search for you.
- Your tracking is accurate. Performance Max optimises to the conversions and values you send it. Wrong data means wrong decisions at scale. See my guide to Google Ads conversion tracking with GA4 and GTM.
How to run Search and Performance Max together
Both campaign types can bid on the same search. Google has published rules for which one wins. According to Google Ads Help, exact match keywords that are identical to the search term get priority. Phrase and broad keywords and Performance Max search themes that are identical to the search term share the next level of priority. After that, Google picks by relevance and then by Ad Rank. In plain terms: if a query is not covered by an identical keyword in Search, Performance Max can take it.
Here is the setup I use to give each campaign a clear job:
- Build a brand Search campaign with exact match keywords for your brand name and common spellings.
- Add a brand exclusion to Performance Max. In Performance Max, brand exclusions apply to Search, Shopping and YouTube search inventory, with an option to still allow Shopping ads for excluded brands.
- Cover your most valuable queries with exact match in Search, so they stay in the campaign where you control the copy and landing page.
- Use campaign-level negatives in Performance Max to block irrelevant terms. Google raised the limit to 10,000 negatives per Performance Max campaign. Read more in my negative keywords guide.
- Compare both search terms reports every two weeks. Look for queries showing up in both campaigns and decide which one should own them.
- Split budgets by goal, not by habit. Brand and core high-intent terms in Search; feed-based products and prospecting in Performance Max.
Where AI Max for Search fits
AI Max narrows the gap between the two campaign types. It lets a Search campaign reach queries beyond your keyword list, rewrite text for intent and send people to the most relevant page, much like Performance Max does on Search inventory. Google is automatically upgrading campaigns that use automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match to AI Max from September 2026, and Dynamic Search Ads are scheduled to sunset in February 2027. Google reports an average of 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS when the full AI Max feature set is used.
What this means for you: with AI Max on, your Search campaign reaches further and will overlap more with Performance Max. Brand controls, negatives and regular search terms reviews matter even more. For the latest Performance Max changes, see Performance Max updates for October 2026.
eCommerce vs lead generation: what I recommend
For eCommerce: start with a brand Search campaign and a Performance Max campaign built on a clean product feed. Add a non-brand Search campaign for your best-selling categories once you see which queries convert. Feed quality decides much of your Performance Max result, so fix titles, images and attributes first. My Google Shopping and Merchant Center service covers this.
For lead generation: start with Search. Lead forms attract spam and low-quality submissions, and Performance Max will happily optimise toward them if a form fill counts as a conversion. Only add Performance Max once you can import qualified lead or sale data from your CRM, so the system learns what a good lead looks like.
For B2B: search volume is low and sales cycles are long. Search with tight keywords is usually the safer core. Test Performance Max only with offline conversion data and strict brand and negative keyword controls.
