Standard Shopping vs Performance Max: Which Should Stores Use?

Online stores can sell through Standard Shopping or Performance Max campaigns. How each works, how they compete for the same products, and a simple way to use both.

Short answer: Standard Shopping shows product ads mainly on Google Search and the Shopping tab, with more control over products, bids and search terms. Performance Max uses the same product feed but can show ads across all Google channels and uses more automation. Many stores use Performance Max as the main campaign and keep Standard Shopping for specific products, tests or tight control. Choose based on your data volume, margins and how much control you need.

How they compete

If Standard Shopping and Performance Max campaigns include the same products, they can both enter the auction. Google has said that the campaign with the higher Ad Rank is used. In practice, Performance Max often wins more traffic because of its bidding and reach. Plan which products go where to avoid confusion.

When Standard Shopping makes sense

  • You want full search term control and negative keywords per campaign
  • You have low conversion volume, so automation has little to learn from
  • You want to test products or bids in isolation
  • You have brand or margin rules that need strict control

When Performance Max makes sense

  • You have steady conversions and accurate values
  • You have good images and video for the other channels
  • You want to scale across Google with less manual work

A simple way to use both

  1. Put your main product range in Performance Max with clear listing groups.
  2. Use Standard Shopping for products with special needs, such as low margin items or tests.
  3. Exclude brand terms from Performance Max where possible, and cover them in a brand Search campaign.
  4. Compare results by product, not only by campaign.

Feed quality comes first

Both campaign types depend on your Merchant Center feed. Clear titles, accurate prices, good images and correct categories matter more than the campaign type.
